Research and Development convention in Boston address Homeland Security | 04.07.2005 | 11:23:55 | Views: 5383 | ID: April 7 '05: The fight in the war on terror requires research and development of the tools necessary to fight the threat of terrorism, according to Homeland Security officials who have decided to bring together 500 research scientists and engineers working throughout the government and in the private sector. A department press release on Thursday announced they would be holding a convention called "Working Together: R&D Partnerships in Homeland Security" in Boston where those attending will "present their innovative work to make the nation safer." The conference will include "30 technical and four poster sessions on Research and Development advances" to address "chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, explosive and cyber" threats, the department release said. The conference will be opened by Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and will go from April 27-28 at the Seaport Hotel and World Trade Center in Boston. The conference will come on the heals of a recent terror-response exercise in New Jersey and Connecticut. The TOPOFF 3 program had local first responders, police and medical personnel respond to a mock terrorist attack. The five-day exercise will help those in the homeland security industry to address the problems and find the strengths of the nation's response to attacks or large-scale emergencies, DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff said. Participating in the exercise were over 10,000 people with 27 federal agencies responding to the simulated attacks. Also, with 200 government and private sector organizations, the UK and Canada participating and with 13 countries, including Mexico oberserving, the TOPOFF exercise is the largest "of its kind dealing with counterterrorism," Chertoff said.
