Homeland Security Academy | 12.30.2005 | 16:44:55 | Views: 4423 | ID: December 30 '05: Under a new bill being proposed in the Senate, first responders, local law enforcement, medical personnel and state government officials involved in emergency response would be able to enroll in an academy designed to "cross-train experts in other areas of expertise so they have a dull understanding of incident response," the Bristol Press has reported. The bill has been authored and sponsored by Senators Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.) and Susan Collins (R-Maine), both frequent collaborators and high-ranking officials on the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. According to Lieberman, the aim of the academy would "cultivate leaders, teach the full range of skills necessary for robus homeland security, and provide cross-disciplinary and joint education and training ... so that they can develop the bonds and relationships that will make their work more efficient and more effective," the Bristol Press reported. Under the proposed bill, a national security education and strategy center would be created to allow federal homeland security officials continued education; a network of training centers cooperating with schools to help awareness; and a training coordination of local and state educators. Similar measures around the nation include the RAINS project in Oregon which links communities together in real "situational awareness" and the National Council on Readiness and Preparedness whose goals is to help create a language and forum for information sharing and real time awareness for national security and emergency issues.
