Cyber Storm exercise in security | 02.13.2006 | 08:27:49 | Views: 4634 | ID: February 13 '06: Homeland Security officials and experts from the private-sector participated in a war game on Friday which was designed to simulate a "significant cyber disruption" - an attack on the United States' cyber-infrastructure by terrorists, "anti-globalization activists, underground hackers and bloggers," the Associated Press reported Monday. Those participating in the exercise known as "Cyber Storm" included government officials from the US, Britain, Canada and Australia as well as experts from Microsoft, Cisco and Verisign. A full report with the results of the exercise is due by the summer, the AP reported. During Cyber Storm, "Experts depicted hackers who shut down electricity in 10 states, failures in vital systems for online banking and retail sales, infected disks mistakenly distributed by commercial software companies and critical flaws discovered in core Internet technology." More than 115 government agencies, companies and organizations participated, the AP found. One official from the Department of Homeland Security told the BBC, the exercise had been "an excellent opportunity to enhance our nation's cyber security." And in a statement, Undersecretary of Homeland Security George Foresman said, "Cyber security is critical to protecting our nation's infrastructure." Other cyber security exercises held by the government have included "Silent Horizon" - an operation undertaken by the Central Intelligence Agency last May.
