Radios for Red Cross | 05.10.2006 | 07:15:57 | Views: 5652 | ID: May 10 '06: As federal officials plan for hurricane season - discussing ways to increase responders' abilities to communicate in times of crisis - the private sector has been mirroring those preparations in communications' abilities. Recently at a Red Cross convention in California, the Eton Corporation announced it would distribute 2,000 new, self powered radios to help Red Cross volunteers across the country. recently, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said that strengthening the response capabilities in "across a number of areas, including logistics ... and emergency communications," would allow federal, state, local, tribal and private sector organizations respond more efficiently to a national or natural threat. Last year, Eton distributed 10,000 radios to after Hurricane Katrina - one of the major obstacles rescue and recovery crews faced in the aftermath of the storm was the inability to communicate with each other. Chertoff said on Monday,, "There's no doubt that achieving interoperable communications for those on the front lines of dealing with terrorism or natural disasters is critical to enhancing our country's preparedness and response capabilities. And the fact of the matter is, although the issue of interoperability is one that was well known and discussed in the law enforcement and emergency management communities for some time, September 11th, I think vividly raised it to the public consciousness."
