Hurricane exercises in New York City | 05.29.2006 | 07:47:06 | Views: 4994 | ID: May 29 '06: Last Friday, New York City emergency officials along with federal Forest Service and city Fire Department authorities participated in an exercise that simulated an "All Risk" scenario of a Category 3 hurricane hitting New York City, a NYFD press release announced. During the exercise, city officials ran through "proper evacuation techniques and search and rescue operations at the FDNY Training Academy on Randall's Island." Recent announcements from officials at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration that this year's hurricane season will be "very active" have prompted coastal city governments to increase their storm preparedness. The New York Daily News reported, "City officials are scrambling to rewrite disaster plans and spread the word about the danger - as well as to move their emergency operations center from a Brooklyn waterfront site to higher ground." During the exercise in the Queens neighborhood of Rockaway, emergency and rescue teams worked on "complex simulations and scenarios that the city would potentially be faced with during a natural disaster" the size of a Category 3 hurricane. Working with the US Forest Service, "a partnership was established between the Department of Agriculture and the FDNY for the Northeast area of US Forest Service to supply instructions to the FDNY and facilitate shadow training at large scale natural disasters or catastrophes."
