New information resource management system for first responders | 08.16.2006 | 06:57:58 | Views: 5649 | ID: August 16 '06: Federal, state and local first responders will have the ability to share and integrate information and resources using a new open-source database management tool, a Federal Emergency Management Agency press release said Tuesday. The National Information Management System, or NIMS, will support a Resource Inventory Management System (RIMS) that will host local information that can be accessed nation-wide. The integration of resources and information, the release said, would aid in providing "functionality" to placing, allocating and tracking much-needed resources. The new RIMS, the release said, was designed to improve "the Nation's ability to identify, mobilize and dispatch" a "typed resource" - allowing federal, state and local responders and their agencies find information quickly and efficiently. Currently, NIMS works to integrate all levels of federal, state and local response information efforts through its National Incident Management System Integration Center or NIC. That integration helps to facilitate "the development and publication of materials (such as supplementary documentation and desk guides) and standardized templates to support implementation and continuos refinement of the NIMS." The new RIMS systems for NIMS will also help to track valuable resources, equipment, supplies, contracts and communications between federal, state and local governments. RIMS also uses the interoperable Emergency Data Exchange Language that focuses on the standardization "of specific messages ... to facilitate emergency communication and coordination."
