New York campaign to get citizens prepared | 09.28.2006 | 06:40:23 | Views: 5433 | ID: September 28 '06: New York City officials and their emergency management counterparts have launched a city-wide citizen preparedness campaign during September which is National Preparedness Month, the city's Office of Emergency Management announced recently. The campaign's goal is to educate residents in the city about emergency response, emergency preparedness and the best way to protect family and friends from a terrorist attack or natural disaster. Paired with public service announcements on radio and television, the city also has erected billboards along major highways and roads and at bus stops warning residents of the possibility of hurricanes, flooding, blackouts, and the necessity to keep basic supplies available in the event of a disaster. The desired effect, according to the website, is to help New Yorkers "get informed, be prepared, and have a plan." Additional resources include disaster plan development outlines, guidelines for creating an emergency supply kit, a "go bag" - a pack of supplies and clothes that can be grabbed and taken in an emergency, and other tips. National Preparedness Month is a DHS-led, nationwide campaign designed to educate and help Americans prepare for natural and national disasters. During the month, more than 80 organizations in all of the country's states and territories along with state and local government agencies are participating in helping to spread the message about emergency preparedness and first response.
