Private Sector heads to work with state and local governments for disaster response | 10.12.2006 | 07:13:47 | Views: 5475 | ID: October 12 '06: The nation's CEO's are working with government officials in Homeland Security and on the federal, state and local levels to boost community response and preparedness as well as help supply chain response in the immediate aftermath of a disaster, USA Today reported Thursday. To help with community response and recovery operations, to help supply much needed food, water and other necessities in the aftermath of a natural or manmade disaster, "nearly 30 CEO's have teamed in an unprecedented effort to set up an 'emergency protocol' with the US government and charities so they can all respond better to the next natural disaster," USA Today reported. "That protocol includes everything from a 24/7 direct phone link to the Department of Homeland Security and a website that will have real-time news about what government needs from business, to 'swat teams' of employees from competing firms. Those teams will fly into a disaster site within 24 hours, assess needs and report back to the government and business community," the paper continued. In November, White House Homeland Security advisor Frances Townsend will meet with CEO's at the White House along with federal officials from DHS and the Federal Emergency Management Agency along with state and local governments and their emergency operations chiefs to help to define the private sector's role in emergency response and management. "The idea is that this works better if the private sector is involved in planning on the front end," Townsend told USA Today.
