Sport stadium security risk and disaster management and response | 10.17.2006 | 06:16:28 | Views: 6132 | ID: October 17 '06: A new study released by the University of Southern Mississippi's School of Human Performance and Recreation found that among security practices at sports stadiums in the US, it is "extremely critical" for communication and cooperation of stadium security along with local, state, regional and federal authorities as well as in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security. Researchers at USM came to their findings after questioning stadium and law enforcement security officials and studying survey responses of stadium and sporting officials and event managers. Best practices handling communication, training, information management and situational awareness were all top priorities that were necessary in securing stadiums and other sports complexes. Additionally, DHS placed sports stadiums high on their list of places with high security concerns. In addition to coordination among law enforcement officials, the study also found that "Sport venue managers must be qualified in the area of sport event security management (SESM) and aware of DHS security initiatives." To date, the NCAA has issued "planning options" to help with security operations that could coordinate with athletic departments in colleges and universities. However, "Industry standards need to be established forcing compliance among members to ensure the sporting public that reasonable measures are in place for safety." Some ways to improve security practices at both professional and collegiate, as well as other sporting venues include a credentialing system to create standards for risk management, communication and training, threat modeling, and simulation situations, the report found.
