Red Cross to reorganize governing structure | 10.31.2006 | 00:29:28 | Views: 4503 | ID: October 31 '06: Red Cross officials have voted to change their governing structure after more than 60 years under the same model, an organizational press release announced Monday. The Associated Press reported that the review came after national criticism of how the organization handled the attacks on Sept. 11 and Hurricane Katrina. According to the AP, "The reforms are intended to ease recurring friction between board members and Red Cross management, and to address complaints that the organization was at time too bureaucratic and unaccountable after Katrina and the attacks." The process to reform the organization's structure came after a six-month review process and after more than 100 interviews "of non-profit sector governance leaders, scholars, government officials, past and present Red Cross board members and officers, management, volunteer chapter leaders, donors and others," the Red Cross press release read. Some of the changes will include, the reorganization of the board's role in daily operations, reduction of the board's size by half, and to reorganize the organization's executive and Cabinet-level positions. The AP reported, "The board would also ask management to improve and expand awareness of the organization's whistleblower process among Red Cross employees and volunteers," after allegations of the organization downplaying internal problems. The Red Cross will release the board's report Wednesday.
