Collaborative federal grant program aims to enhace pipeline security | 12.11.2006 | 05:37:50 | Views: 5388 | ID: December 11 '06: A new federal grant program will target cooperative efforts between the Department of Transportation and universities in West Virginia to facilitate working toward securing and safely managing the pipeline supply infrastructure, the Huntington News reported. West Virginia Democrat Nick J. Rahall, the initiative's sponsor, added the pipeline and technical assistance program to the Pipeline Safety Improvement Act of 2006, "the goal of which will be to increase the safety and security at and along our Nation's pipelines," the Huntington News reported. Additional details of the bill would "allow Universities [sic] to team together to seek a grant to establish workforce training and assistance programs on pipeline safety and security. Specifically, the program will allow universities to provide courses in the safety and security of pipeline systems, incident and risk management and vulnerability assessments of pipeline systems." A mandatory report with the collaboration's results would be submitted to the DOT and Congress to ensure any future funding.
