Virginia promotes readiness campaign resolution for 2007 | 01.08.2007 | 07:08:56 | Views: 4632 | ID: January 8: The Richmond Times Dispatch reported recently that Virginia commonwealth officials are urging residents to be resolved in their families' ability to be prepared for a disaster and the first 72 hours after a disaster. The "Resolve to be Ready" campaign was begun in cooperation with the Department of Homeland Security's larger national Ready Campaign. On the Virginia Department of Emergency Management website, the agency calls for families and individuals to have an "emergency supply kit, create a communications plan and stay informed," so that people can be ready when disaster strikes. Michael Cline, the state coordinator for the VDEM said, "This is the time of year when we all look at our lives and see what we can do better, and emergency preparedness should be included in that process." The Times Dispatch quoted Marc LaFountain a VDEM spokesman who said the message of the Resolve to be Ready campaign relies on "simple, commonsense steps people can take to be prepared. ... We find that people say they are too busy in some cases ... But it doesn't have to be a Herculean effort. When it comes to a kit, it just takes a moment to pull it all together ... and in many instances they may be things you already have around your home," LaFountain said regarding emergency preparedness kits. LaFountain said those citizens who are prepared will be able to act calmly during a disaster which will increase their chances of making the right decisions to help keep themselves and their families safe while they wait for local, state and federal responder help, the Times Dispatch reported.
