S&T directorate creates new program in DHS to help deliver emerging technologies to first responders | 04.02.2007 | 07:45:49 | Views: 5517 | ID: April 2 '07: The Department of Homeland Security's Science and Technology Directorate has created a new technology oversight project called the TechSolutions Program to help deliver new and emerging technologies to first responders. DHS Undersecretary for S&T Jay Cohen said the goal was to develop a forum where first responders could take their ideas about technological best practices and apply them to research and development. "No one understands the needs of the first responders better than the first responders," Cohen said on the program's website. "Every day, hundreds of law enforcement officers, fire fighters, emergency medical services personnel and bomb-squad members think, 'there's a better way to do this,' an we want to hear from them." Specifically, the goal of the program "is to field technologies that meet 80% of the operational requirement, in a 12 to 15 month time frame, at a cost commensurate with the proposal (but less than $1 million per project). Goals will be accomplished through rapid prototyping and the identification of existing technologies that satisfy identified requirements." Responders are encouraged to participate in the program and should email techsolutions@dhs.gov for more information or to submit a proposal.
