Recent pet food recall shows vulnerability officials say | 04.26.2007 | 07:46:55 | Views: 5655 | ID: April 26 '07: Officials from the Food and Drug Administration told the Associated Press recently that the recent pet food recalls earlier in the month show a gap in the security apparatus put into place to ensure the safety of imported food. FDA inspectors, the AP reported, are totally overwhelmed with the rising total of imports with many shipments being found to be "filthy or otherwise contaminated." "By its own latest accounting, the FDA had enough inspectors to check only about 1 percent of the 8.9 million imported food shipments in fiscal year 2006," the AP reported. "Topping the list were products with past problems, such as seafood and produce." Experts told the AP that if a potential terrorist were to plan an attack using the food supply, it would not be very hard to "to put some type of a toxic chemical into a product that's trusted, that could do a lot of damage before it's detected," the University of Georgia's Center for Food and Safety microbiologist Michael Doyle said.(Click below to download file) food-safety.pdf
