Dartmouth releases new CBRNE virtual training tool | 05.22.2007 | 09:37:26 | Views: 5701 | ID: May 22 '07: Dartmouth College has announced the release of a new virtual training tool for first responders which focuses on chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive emergencies. The new computer-based tool has more than 16 hours of training material and is the first course in the college's Interactive Media Laboratory's Virtual Terrorism Response Academy. The program, titled, "Ops-Plus for WMD Hazmat," is directed by Joseph Henderson, MD who said in a college news release that the training scenarios "blend video of real humans who are expert hazmat trainers into the gaming environment. ... It's no just glorified PowerPoint. It's accessible and effective. Even if you've never played a video game, you can learn from 'Ops-Plus,' and you can easily use this over and over again to keep your skills sharp." The program works by simulating "increasingly tactical situations," which are driven by the choices the trainee picks to create "scenarios that would involve life-and-death consequences during real incidents," Henderson continued. The virtual training program and its umbrella organizations were developed through federal funding and guidance provided by the Department of Homeland Security. The program went on sale in January of this year and is already being used in state and local emergency management agencies as a training tool, Dartmouth News reported.
