New NY alert messaging system leverages public and private assets | 06.04.2007 | 08:29:01 | Views: 6308 | ID: June 4 '07: Government Technology News reported that New York Governor Elliot Spitzer has announced the creation of two new web-based emergency alert systems for residents of his state. One of the systems, NY-DELIVER, will leverage public/private assets and operations while NY-ALERT will work to handle weather related emergencies, a New York State Emergency Management Office press release read. Both services will go online in 60 days, the NYOEM said. NY-DELIVER was designed using "best practices identified after Hurricane Katrina," the press release continued Spitzer said the two notification systems will "help enhance the state's response to natural and man-made disasters by improving emergency notifications to the public and by forming stronger networks to deliver critical commodities such as food and water following an emergency." GovTech reported the systems' development "was led by Deputy Secretary for Public Safety Michael Balboni, who said: 'Two of the critical lessons from Hurricane Katrina are that effective communication is imperative, and there is no such thing as too much cooperation between the public and private sector to provide aid and assistance.'" At heart: NY-ALERT will provide notifications to the public using a secure web portal. The messaging will be in the form of email, text, phone, fax and dial-out voice messaging. NY-DELIVER will "be led by a working group composed of state agencies and private sector representatives ... This parallel structure will ensure governmental operations are working hand-in-hand with private sector stakeholders for a cohesive response and recovery effort during emergency situations," GovTech reported according to the official release.(Click below to download file) 2007_0531_nyalert.pdf
