IBM releases pandemic prediction software | 06.08.2007 | 08:30:12 | Views: 6031 | ID: June 8 '07: Reuters reported that IBM has released pandemic prediction software which will be donated to public health officials to help predict and mitigate any possible international health emergency. The software, called Spatiotemporal Epidemiological Modeler or STEM will be available to more than 20 health agencies worldwide. Examples of the software show graphically, the spread of an infectious disease around the world - emanating from large urban centers and spreading out concentrically into more sparse populations. On its website, IBM said the program's ability to map-out disease vectors is in part from a built-in Geographical Information System (GIS). STEM also "comes with data about country borders, populations, shared borders (neighbors), interstate highways, state highways, and airports," the website read. Developers hope that the program "facilitates the development of advanced mathematical models, the creation of flexible models involving multiple populations (species) and interactions between diseases, and a better understanding of epidemiology."
