Pharm company to donate flu vaccines | 06.14.2007 | 08:56:59 | Views: 6091 | ID: June 14 '07: The pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline PLC has announced in a press release that it will donate 50 million doses of the H5N1 flu vaccine to the World Health Organization to help build a pandemic vaccine stockpile for the poorest countries. Over the course of three years, the company will deliver enough doses to inoculate 25 million people - each receiving a two-course dose of the medication, the press release announced. The company's announcement comes while in the U.S. the Department of Health and Human Services is holding a pandemic summit while supplementing the discussion with a five-week pandemic flu blog. Much of the discussion among experts on the blog revolve around building grass-roots organizations designed to help spread information quickly while in the meantime, trying to keep sensationalism out of the discussion. Dr. John Oxford, professor of virology at Queen Mary School of Medicine in the U.K. said in the the Glaxo press release that having donations of the vaccine helps to increase cooperation from countries where human infection is on the rise. "It's just what we need to reassure countries like Indonesia that they will get something in return from the viruses they provide, which will form the basis of these vaccines." Currently, several issues surrounding the vaccines and a global pandemic are the distribution, delivery and replenishment of the medicines - something participants on the HHS Pandemic blog are discussing.(Click below to download file) communitypandemicpreparedness.pdf
