San Francisco using new web-based emergency alert system | 07.17.2007 | 07:51:49 | Views: 5496 | ID: July 17 '07: The City of San Francisco has been employing a new web-based emergency alert system that sends messages to residents' PDA's, cellphones, laptops and pagers, PC World reported. The service, called AlertSF, now has about 8,400 subscribers using it. Originally designed to send tsunami alerts and post-disaster information, the AlertSF site has been coupled with San Francisco's 72Hours website which helps to identify best practices and preparedness steps that can be taken to help families, businesses and institutions in the area. Registration takes little time and it can be customized to send messages in English or Spanish. "Users can opt in and out of nationwide Amber Alerts about missing or kidnapped children, California weather alerts issued by the U.S. National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration and USGS earthquake alerts," PC World reported.
