Red Cross and business leaders in Long Beach promote earthquake preparedness | 09.17.2007 | 06:05:29 | Views: 5645 | ID: September 17 '07: The Press Telegram in Long Beach, California reported that the Red Cross has partnered with local business leaders to promote greater business preparedness - specifically earthquake preparedness. At the law offices of Keesal, Young, and Logan in Long Beach, an emergency preparedness seminar will host presenters from the U.S. Geological Survey and local radio stations on Wednesday. Along with literature, there will be videos and presentations showing how local businesses can work to prepare themselves and their employees to respond to and recover from disasters. "Tips including storing financial and personal information in a secure, off-site location, using flash drives to store information, securing computers to desktops and fastening file cabinets to walls," are just some of the ways companies can mitigate damages caused by earthquakes, the Press Telegram wrote. Organizers said that companies can learn more about earthquake preparedness at the Daretoprepare.org website. "In the aftermath of the estimated 6.3 magnitude earthquake that rocked Long Beach in 1993, dozens of key businesses, including grocery stores, banks and hardware outlets, were shuttered as crews worked to clear debris and ruin." The Long Beach paper continued, "Unemployment locally became exacerbated as workers had no place to go, and within days, food and supplies became so scarce in some parts of town that residents were forced to line up in local parks for free soup supplied by the Red Cross."
