In a press release the airline company said that the service would service both entertainment and business interests. Internet service would be supplied via a satellite link beamed to an antenna on top of the plane's fuselage. In an article posted on InformationWeek's website, the technology also will be used to help cabin crew operations, "flight operations, as well as technical operations and cargo services." The announcement to use wireless Internet on all flights in the lower 48 states, Alaska, Canada, Mexico and Hawaii was made during the World Airline Entertainment Association Conference and Exhibition in Toronto, InformationWeek reported.
