Georgia school to offer homeland security degree | 10.01.2007 | 08:20:23 | Views: 5813 | ID: October 1 '07: Savannah State University will be the first school in Georgia to offer its students a degree in homeland security, the Savannah Morning News reported. Nine students have signed up for the major which will be "housed" in the Department of Political Science, Public Administration, and Urban Studies, a press release from the University announced. The new major will "engage faculty from three colleges - Business Administration, Liberal Arts & Social Sciences and Science & Technology - to equip students with theoretical and applied knowledge to assume leadership roles in effectively managing all hazards," the SSU's press release read. Those who choose the major "will study the basics of homeland security and emergency management from a number of perspectives including causes and effects of natural disasters, foreign and domestic terrorist threats against the U.S., infrastructure protection and intelligence analysis." Students also will be required to gain "competence" in at least one foreign language out of Chinese, Arabic, Spanish or Farsi.
