In a press release, the company said that it was "exporting between 8.5 and 11.5 Megawatts of energy to the San Diego power grid - enough to meet the power consumption needs of between 8,000 and 11,000 homes." Solar Turbines worked with in partnership with San Diego Gas & Electric "to provide assistance during the wildfire-induced electrical transmission crisis," the press release read. Because power to communities is essential, new smarter power grid designs are beginning to develop ways to allow appliances, homes and power stations to "talk" to each other over the internet to reduce consumption and transfer energy to locations where it is needed most. In some cases, in testing sites in Washington state, power consumption during peak usage was decreased by as much as 50 percent.
