Hawaii hospitals participate in mock bioterror response drill | 03.24.2008 | 06:13:29 | Views: 6090 | ID: March 24 '08: The Star Bulletin reported a partnership of 12 hospitals across Hawaii which participated in a mock bioterror response drill. The exercise, conducted in partnership by the state's Department of Health and the Healthcare Association of Hawaii simulated exposure to anthrax and was meant to simulate the activation of the Strategic National Stockpile, a press release read. The Honolulu Advertiser reported, "the exercise is designed to test, document and improve the state's ability to distribute medication to hospital workers in the event of an anthrax attack." Department of Health Director Chiyome Fukino, M.D. said, "we want to make sure Hawaii's healthcare providers are one of the first groups to receive medication. ... It's essential they be able to continue to provide care to the public during a disaster situation in order to treat and reduce illness for their patients." The Star Bulletin quoted the Healthcare Association of Hawaii's Director of Emergency Services Toby Clairmont who said that the exercise was planned in two phases. In the first part of the phase, the health department worked with the healthcare association to distribute the medications to the hospitals. In the second part of the planned exercise, medical personnel and first responders with their families were screened at designated distribution points to receive the medications.
