America's Emergency Network - public/private partnership to deliver nation-wide emergency network | 07.25.2008 | 09:58:28 | Views: 11953 | ID: July 24 '08: Last year, organizers from America's Emergency Network (AEN) announced a new public/private partnership providing a suite of communications technologies for the general public and state, local and federal emergency response officials and government agencies. AEN provides a website containing video feeds and bulletins issued by OEMs and other government agencies in addition to AEN-TV (for emergency response and government agencies) as well the radio based AlertFM warning system. More specifically, AEN-TV is a "TV channel carrying the most important news conferences and other feeds from emergency management offices and government agencies. Some feeds will be carried live, while others will be prioritized and run on a schedule posted on the channel," the website read. And in July this year, AEN announced a new partnership with HughesNet©, the satellite Internet and communication company. Under the new partnership, HughesNet will "provide the broadband satellite backbone of AEN's pioneering satellite-video-Internet emergency communications network using HughesNet service," a press release announced. The capability provided by the new partnership, AEN said in the press release, will allow high-speed data transfers and remote-location accessibility for emergency response personnel who wish to access and send high volumes of information. The new technology "will provide high-resolution video suitable for television outlets; video that can be fed directly to publicly available web pages; and in the future, video that will be sent directly to cell phones, PDAs, and other mobile devices," the press release noted. AEN was begun by Bryan Norcross, a hurricane expert who has worked the CBS affiliate WFOR-TV in Miami, Florida. To help Norcross, former National Hurricane Center Director Max Mayfield will work with government emergency management personnel to help use AEN's system. AEN's capabities' foundation lies in the technology provided by Global Security Systems (AlertFM) which is headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi.
