OAS gets anti-terrorism funding raise | 02.24.2005 | 14:23:04 | Views: 4666 | ID: February 24 '05: In a modern-day, post 9/11 version of the Monroe Doctrine, the Department of Homeland Security has stepped up its efforts at protecting the Western Hemisphere against the threat of terror. DHS has announced an additional $1.6 million to "expand counter-terrorism coordination ... bringing the total US contribution to $5 million since the 9/11 attacks." According to the head of the US delegation to the Organization of American States' Inter-American Committee Against Terrorism (CICTE), Asa Hutchinson, "The United States values effective multilateral institutions like CICTE and believes strongly that this body should continue to play and instrumental role in the security of the Western Hemisphere." Among the issues addressed which will be helped by the additional funding are document security; aviation security; biometrics sharing; and methods which deal with the links between terrorism and narcotics trafficking. The information was provided by a press release from DHS.
